BACKGROUND & GOALS: Although I dreamed of going into an Ivy League, I never thought I would get in- I had a crazy childhood, went into foster care, and ended up going to five high schools. When junior year rolled around, I realized I needed to explain my circumstances in order to have a chance anywhere. Even though I was at a private school, the guidance counselors would only talk about college with seniors. I started reading everything I could about how to get in and in the process I found Dr. Kat's book "Rock Hard Apps." She had several case studies of kids who had to explain difficult circumstances and I realized I needed someone like her to help me. DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: I was a pro-bono client working with Kat Cohen. From the very beginning, we started turning my past from a liability into an asset. It tied into my academic interests, and my career goal to become a doctor. Dr. Kat was very critical of my essays, which made me re-write them until they were sterling. She focused a lot on the content and got me to delve deeper until I really got to the raw emotions. I never could have pushed that hard on my own.
RESULTS & FINAL THOUGHTS: In the end, I got into Harvard, Penn, Wellesley, Smith, Harvey Mudd, Mount Holyoke and University of Wisconsin. I ended up at Harvard.
Although IvyWise is not cheap, for applicants with a chance and who have a story to tell, it's a great investment. Harvard offered me $60K more in grants than any other school, so it would have paid for itself.]]In the end, I think the cohesive story of me as an applicant was Dr. Kat's biggest contribution. Although I had good grades and won several national writing competitions, I don't believe I would have gotten in without the portrayals of my experience she helped me craft.
